Frequently Asked Questions

About Cedar Lumber & Western Red Cedar Wood
How do I store cedar lumber, wood?

Lumber should never be stored directly on the ground. It should always be covered with cedar lumber wrap, which allows air to circulate moisture out, but not into the stack. Avoid moving cedar lumber when it is raining. Always keep cedar lumber on dunnage so that air can circulate under the pile. Interior products such as cedar paneling should be stored inside, and allowed to acclimatize. Never store cedar lumber in a room with fresh concrete or drywall. Let the cedar wood product acclimatize for at least one week before application. Ideally you should keep the cedar wood in the room it will be installed in.

Western Red Cedar, BC Western Red Cedar, and West Coast Western Red Cedar

Scientific Name: Thuja plicata
Other common names: red cedar, BC Western Red Cedar, and West Coast Western Red Cedar. Known for its extremely fine and even grain, its flexibility and strength in proportion to its weight, Western Red Cedar is a species of wood whose lumber can be used in a variety of ways. Western Red Cedar is renowned for its high impermeability to liquids and its natural phenol preservatives, which make it ideally suited for exterior use and interior use where humidity is high.

The cellular composition of cedar, millions of tiny air-filled cells per cubic inch, provides a high degree of thermal insulation, approx. 1 R/inch. Western Red Cedars’ slow growth, dense fiber and natural oily extractives are responsible for its decay resistance and its rich coloring, which ranges from a light milky straw color in the sapwood to a vanilla-chocolate in the heartwood. It is a stable wood that seasons easily and quickly, with a very low shrinkage factor. It is free of pitch and has excellent finishing qualities.

About Sustainable Forestry

Canada is the second largest country in the world with forest or other wooded land making up 40% of its 979 million hectares. Canada’s forest cover represents 30% of the world’s forest and 10% of the world’s overall forest cover.
Under Canada’s Constitution, the federal and provincial/territorial governments have specific roles in the management of public forest lands.

Management that maintains and enhances the long-term health of forest ecosystems for the benefit of all living things while providing environmental, economic, social, and cultural opportunities for present and future generations.

Forests are a major part of Canada’s landscape and central to its economy. The practice of sustainable forest management requires that the contemplated actions be analyzed at the landscape level, and not the stand level, as is common in traditional forest management. Furthermore, all forest resources are recognized and given consideration in the integrity rank on par with economic efficiency, community development, and resource extraction rates. These goals have been adopted, in the recent past, by foresters throughout the world.

How long will it take to receive my order?

Arrival at the job site of your material is dependent on many factors you should consider and discuss with your salesman when negotiating a purchase. Estimations are provided to you based on the need for remanufacture (milling, staining), special order (unusual dimensions or length), final destination, payment terms, volume, job scheduling and availability. Once your order has left our yard you will be contacted and given an updated ETA. For up to the minute status, please call Cedar Specialty Shoppe and ask to speak with your sales person or shipping coordinator.
